About Free Scrabble Dictionary

The story behind Free Scrabble Dictionary is one I love to tell — it's funny how we got started.

In 2008 the site was born from a conversation with a co-worker. He told me he hated playing his mother-in-law at Scrabble because she knew every word and whether it was real. I'm a web developer, so an idea popped into my head: "How about I build you a website that, no matter what you type, always returns a definition?" He loved it. That night I bought freescrabbledictionary.com, had the site up within a couple of hours, and added four obscure definitions for words nobody would know for sure. Yes — four definitions. 🙂

A year and a half later I'd completely forgotten about it. I looked one day and it was still running, so I added traffic tracking — and the next day it was pulling around 5,000 visitors and nearly 250,000 page views. The whole time, the dictionary had four definitions and was returning a "definition" for anything you typed. Apologies to anyone who trusted us back then — I promise it wasn't on purpose.

Today Free Scrabble Dictionary is one of the leading Scrabble-dictionary sites on the web. We've rebuilt it from the ground up: every word in the official NASPA word list, a broad English dictionary on top, real definitions from Wiktionary, points, anagrams, word lists, and tools for Scrabble, Words With Friends and more.
