From Latin Emesa, from Ancient Greek Ἔμεσα (Émesa), ultimately from Aramaic חֲמָת (Ḥamāth, “hindrance, frustration, fortress”) + צובָא (Ṣōwḇā, “near, surrounding, station”). Doublet of Homs.
