Etymology

Early 18th-century adoption into English as a common noun, with its earliest use credited to Philip Wharton, 1st Duke of Wharton. From Ancient Greek Παράλιος (Parálios, “Paralian”), from παράλιος (parálios, “coastal, maritime”), from παρα- (para-, “beside, next to”) + ἅλς (háls, “salt, seawater”) + -ιος (-ios, adjectival suffix).
