Etymology

From medieval abbreviations of Middle English Sarisberie, Sarisburie (the spelling attested in the Domesday Book) as Sar̅ or Saꝝ. Because such marks were usually used to abbreviate the Latin ending -rum, by the 13th century some writers mistakenly assumed the full name was Sarum (by the 14th century, Robert Wyvil described himself as episcopus Sarum).
