Etymology

From Old English Solentan, ultimately of unknown origin. Among the range of suggestions include: * a relationship with sol (“mud, wet sand”). * Bede's form Soluente suggests the second element was an pre-Celtic Proto-Indo-European *auent- (“to wet, to spring”).
